Your choice of house decides which war you fight, which students you recruit and how hard the game can get, so here is how the pieces fit together.

A school year, then a war
Fire Emblem: Three Houses opens with a mercenary turned professor leading a class of noble students as a continent slides toward war. [1] If you are picking a house for the first time, that choice shapes the whole game.
The first half of the game is a school year at Garreg Mach Monastery. [1] The second half takes place five years later and is the war that your chosen house drags you into. [1]
Intelligent Systems' 2019 installment of the series takes place in the same universe as Fortune's Weave. [2] Unlike Fortune's Weave, Three Houses locks the player in with one hero for the whole game. [2]
Routes and the order to play them
The Blue Lions and Golden Deer each lead straight into a single route. [1] Crimson Flower is the shortest route at 18 chapters. [1]
Silver Snow is a variant of Crimson Flower in which you betray Edelgard at the end of Chapter 11 of Act One. [2] In that route you shift your allegiance to the Church of Seiros. [2]
The routes guide recommends playing Crimson Flower first, then Azure Moon and Verdant Wind, and leaving Silver Snow for last. [1]
Who you can recruit
Whichever house you pick, most students from the other two houses can be recruited. [1] The house leaders Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude cannot be recruited into other houses. [1]
Only the three house leaders and a few retainers loyal to them are off the table. [1]
Classes and the Dancer
Female characters have exclusive access to the Pegasus Knight, Falcon Knight, Gremory and Dark Flier classes. [2] Male characters have exclusive access to the Fighter, Brawler, Grappler, War Master, Dark Mage and Dark Bishop classes. [2]
Access to the Dancer class requires winning the White Heron Cup dance competition during Chapter Nine of Act One. [2] Winning it requires a character with at least 13 points in the Charm stat. [2] The Dancer can grant a second action to an allied unit during the same turn. [2]
Maddening difficulty and Renown
Three Houses lets you attempt its toughest difficulty, Maddening, from the start without completing a playthrough on normal. [2] In Maddening, experience is halved and enemies gain extra abilities such as commanders who leave their healing tiles and quick ambushes. [1]
Renown is the currency used for Saint Statues, Dragon Signs, the Pagan Altar and extra Divine Pulse charges. [1] A fully restored Saint Statue costs 10,000 Renown. [1] Renown can be earned in five ways, including side quests, tournaments and an MVP result in battle. [1]
New Game Plus lets you spend Renown to upgrade Professor Rank, boost Byleth's skill levels and unlock supports right away. [2]
What this means for your playthrough
If you are new to the game, the routes guide recommends starting with Crimson Flower and leaving Silver Snow for last. [1] Crimson Flower is also the shortest route at 18 chapters. [1]
If you want the Dancer, you need a character with at least 13 points in the Charm stat to win the White Heron Cup in Chapter Nine of Act One. [2] If you want a student from another house, most can be recruited, but Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude cannot. [1]
If you want the hardest setting, Maddening is open from the start. [2]
A fan rebuilds the monastery
A fan recreated the layout of Garreg Mach Monastery inside Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. [3] The fan, gh0st2_00, shared the recreation on Twitter. [3]
It includes the dorm buildings, the main hall and classrooms, and the market at the monastery entrance. [3]
