Reports point to a 30 FPS target on current consoles, and Sony's own PS5 display and audio settings are worth knowing before launch.

The wait is nearly over

After more than 13 years, the wait for Grand Theft Auto VI is nearly over. [1] GTA 6 is set to release on November 19, 2026. [2]

The game is expected to be one of the most demanding and best-looking GTA games ever made. [1] If you play on a PlayStation, that means it is expected to demand all the power a console can provide, even on a PlayStation 5 Pro. [1]

What the reports say about frame rate

According to a report by Video Games Chronicle, GTA 6 may be limited to 30 FPS across current-generation consoles, including PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PS5 Pro. [2] The report suggests Rockstar is prioritising open-world density, complex physics, crowd simulation and weather effects over higher frame rates. [2]

Digital Foundry reportedly found that an extended GTA 6 demo on standard PS5 runs at a native 1440p, upscaled to 4K, at a 30 FPS target. [2] The game also reportedly uses hardware-accelerated ray tracing for global illumination and realistic reflections. [2]

There has been no confirmed announcement of a 60 FPS mode for the PS5. [2] The Xbox Series X and Series S are also expected to target 30 FPS, according to the report. [2]

What is still open

The reported 30 FPS target has not been officially accompanied by confirmation ruling out other performance modes. [2] Some players have hoped GTA 6 could offer a 40 FPS mode on PS5 Pro for 120Hz displays. [2]

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has expressed confidence in the development team's ability to optimise the game for Xbox Series S. [2] Rockstar has not announced a PC release date for GTA 6. [2]

How we got here

Much like the previous GTA game, GTA 6 is expected to come out at the tail end of a console generation's lifecycle, as GTA V did for the PlayStation 3. [1] The original Grand Theft Auto V launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, and console players did not get a 60 FPS version until its PS5 and Xbox Series release. [2]

Red Dead Redemption 2 remains limited to 30 FPS on consoles despite its detailed open world. [2]

PS5 video settings to check

VRR (variable refresh rate) lets the TV change its refresh rate to match the frames the PS5 is producing. [1] A TV must support VRR to use it, and VRR usually comes with HDMI 2.1. [1] It is enabled at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > VRR. [1]

The Apply to Unsupported Games option, according to Sony, can stabilize frame rate in games that don't natively support VRR. [1] ALLM (auto low-latency mode) switches a supported TV into its low-latency game mode automatically. [1] According to Sony, the PS5 switches a TV to low-latency game mode whenever VRR is used, even when ALLM is set to Off. [1]

The 120Hz Output setting lets the PS5 send a 120Hz signal to TVs and games that can use it. [1] The PS5 should be connected to an HDMI 2.1 input, because not every HDMI port on a TV supports a 120Hz signal. [1] A 30fps game fits a 120Hz signal exactly, with each frame held for four refreshes, which keeps pacing even. [1] The option is at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > 120 Hz Output. [1]

HDR and audio

GTA 6 moves from dark, neon-soaked nightclubs to bright Florida sun, sometimes within the same mission, so HDR matters for detail and color. [1] The HDR setting is at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR, where Always On converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR, while On When Supported shows them in standard dynamic range, according to Sony. [1]

HDR calibration is done at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR. [1] It is advised to run it in the room lighting you play in, and it needs to be done only once. [1] If the TV has an HGIG mode, it should be turned on so the TV does not apply its own tone mapping on top of the console's. [1]

According to Sony, 3D Audio provides immersive surround sound, such as hearing footsteps from the direction someone is approaching. [1] 3D Audio for headphones is set at Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), and a personalized profile is created by listening to sounds from different positions. [1] Sony offers five 3D Audio presets, used whenever the personalized profile is off. [1]

The PS5 does not directly support Bluetooth audio, so wireless Bluetooth headphones need a USB adapter. [1] Sony's Pulse 3D wireless headset was tuned specifically for the console's 3D Audio. [1]

What it means for you

If you plan to play on PS5 or PS5 Pro, the reported target is 30 FPS, and no 60 FPS mode has been confirmed. [2] A 30fps game fits a 120Hz signal exactly, so the 120Hz Output setting and an HDMI 2.1 input are worth checking. [1]

Your TV needs VRR support to use that feature, and it usually comes with HDMI 2.1. [1] If your TV has an HGIG mode, it should be turned on, and HDR calibration needs to be done only once. [1]

For sound, wireless Bluetooth headphones need a USB adapter on the PS5. [1] The reported 30 FPS target has not been officially accompanied by confirmation ruling out other performance modes. [2]
