Five regions, six to nine hours

Modern Warfare 4's campaign takes players across Hajin City in South Korea, North Korea, New York City, Paris, and Mumbai [1]. If you plan to play the story, the main run takes about six hours, and exploration can stretch it to around nine [1].

Modern Warfare 4 was released the day before the source article was published [2]. Infinity Ward's story bounces between an invasion of South Korea, the brutality of North Korea, and Captain Price's quest for revenge [3].

The story and the cast

The story unfolds across two interconnected threads: the conflict in Korea and Captain John Price's pursuit of Vladimir Makarov [1]. Makarov dies relatively early in the campaign, in a gruesome death that reframes Price's mission [1]. Returning character Valeria adds another layer [1].

Barry Sloane plays Captain Price [3]. Mads Mikkelsen plays the main villain [3]. Young Mazino performs the role of Park Hyun-Jun [3].

The reviewer found Mikkelsen's character compelling, though they wished he had more screen time [1]. The story is described as equal parts dumb and genius, with some moments wildly over-the-top [3].

Stranded, the Paris chase and the nightclubs

The open-ended Stranded mission features objectives reminiscent of Far Cry [1]. Players who explore the environment, search for supplies and intel, and complete optional objectives can spend around three hours in it [1]. That mission accounts for much of the gap between the six-hour main story and the nine-hour full run [1].

The Paris car chase combines frantic vehicle combat and cinematic presentation against a slick urban backdrop [1]. Nightclub scenes feature close-quarters combat and stylish presentation that brings to mind the John Wick films [1].

What the campaign leaves out

The campaign has no cooperative mode this time [1]. It also lacks a progression system [1]. There are no giant boss fights featuring Michael Rooker [1].

Dialogue choices are present, but the reviewer found them largely inconsequential to the story [1]. Hand-to-hand combat relies on quick-time events during counterattacking and blocking sequences, and these interrupt the flow of the action [1].

Multiplayer and DMZ changes

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer includes a 10v10 Gunfight mode played entirely on the Kill Block map [3]. The game launches with Gun Game [3]. Shipment is confirmed as a future map [3].

Omnimovement is removed from multiplayer [3]. Players no longer burn through double XP tokens when they are not in matches [3]. DMZ deploys a squad of three players on a large map where they explore and loot [3].

Matchmaking

Modern Warfare 4 has shipped with SBMM style matchmaking in effect, even though alternative options were accessible during the beta [2]. Joe Cecot, multiplayer creative director, says there is probably no perfected matchmaking system [2]. He said the end goal is that every match is a good match [2].

What this means for you

If you want to play the campaign solo, expect about six hours for the main story and around nine with exploration [1]. If you were hoping to play it with friends, the campaign has no cooperative mode [1]. Nor does it have a progression system [1].

If you like open-ended play, Stranded can take around three hours [1]. If you play multiplayer, omnimovement is gone [3], and the game ships with SBMM style matchmaking in effect [2]. Double XP tokens no longer burn down while you are out of matches [3].
